The Hertz Corporation is introducing compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to its fleet in the US. Hertz also deploys CNG airport buses at its Los Angeles Airport location and rents CNG vehicles in both Italy and the United Kingdom. The fuel also typically costs half the price of gasoline and is produced domestically.

The digesters will use the waste to produce biomethane to be converted into renewable compressed natural gas fuel. This fuel has 88% lower carbon intensity than ultra-low-sulfur diesel. This fuel has 88% lower carbon intensity than ultra-low-sulfur diesel. Vehicles in this weight range are typically medium-duty trucks or vans.

California Air Resources Board (ARB) staff has posted four new Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) pathways to the LCFS web site. Others are sugarcane molasses ethanol from Guatemala; mixed feedstock to biodiesel from Texas; and a new ARB-staff-developed pathway for North American landfill gas. The baseline CI value for gasoline is 95.86

California Air Resources Board (ARB) staff has posted five new Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) fuel pathway applications to the LCFS public comments website: two for biodiesel, one for renewable diesel, and two for ethanol. The baseline CI value for gasoline is 95.86 The carbon intensity (CI) for biodiesel from CO is 9.78.

Volkswagen unveiled the Golf Sportwagen HyMotion hydrogen fuel cell hybrid research vehicle demonstrator yesterday at the Los Angeles Auto Show ( earlier post ). The fuel cell and battery power an electric motor adapted from the e-Golf. The fleet of Passat HyMotion vehicles is currently being tested on the streets of California.

Today most hydrogen is made from natural gas; there is the potential for very low or zero-carbon hydrogen to be produced at scale, according to Shell. However, Shell does produce hydrogen from electricity on site (via electrolysis) in three of its stations (Santa Monica, CA; White Plains, New York; and Reykjavik, Iceland).
