VERBIO begins production of biomethane from corn stover in Iowa; first-large scale plant in US

Green Car Congress

During this process, raw biogas is produced comprising about 55% methane and 45% carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide and other impurities are removed through a biogas treatment process, leaving nearly pure biomethane gas which is chemically equivalent to fossil natural gas. —Claus Sauter, CEO of VERBIO AG.

HyIron opens direct reduction plant for green iron

Green Car Congress

HyIron, with the support of the state of Lower Saxony, has commissioned what it says is the world’s largest direct reduction plant for green iron on the site of RWE’s Emsland gas-fired power plant. Instead of carbon dioxide, this technology produces only water vapor, which can be reused for hydrogen production.

BASF and RWE proposing 2GW offshore wind farm for green electricity and hydrogen for chemical industry

Green Car Congress

Examples of such technologies are: eCracker: Electrically heated steam cracker furnaces to produce petrochemicals at high temperatures (~850 °C); these temperatures will be reached in the eCracker using electricity instead of natural gas. Methane pyrolysis: Methane pyrolysis uses green electricity to split methane into hydrogen and carbon.

MAHLE criticizes EC CO2 regulation proposal for abandoning technology neutrality

Green Car Congress

Last week, the European Commission adopted a package of proposals to make the EU’s climate, energy, land use, transport and taxation policies fit for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels (Fit for 55). As a result, all new cars registered as of 2035 will be zero-emission.
