The California Energy Commission CEC is awarding Silicon Valley startup Wrightspeed a $5.789-million grant for Advanced Vehicle Technology Manufacturing. Wrightspeed made its first conversion kit for the Isuzu NPR. Wrightspeed’s Geared Traction Drive integrates an electric motor, a two-speed gear box and an inverter.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.

It tested the performance of two 2007 model Prius hybrids and then converted them into plug-in hybrids using a Hymotion 5kWh lithium-ion battery conversion kit. In its most recent study the prototype battery was replaced with a production model battery and the same pool of drivers was used during vehicle evaluation.
