The Abfallentsorgungs-Gesellschaft Ruhrgebiet mbH ( AGR ), a waste management company in Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has put a converted DAF CF 340 hydrogen fuel cell truck into operation as part of the EU-funded HECTOR (Hydrogen Waste Collection Vehicles in North West Europe) project.

For this an existing Siemens SGT-400 industrial gas turbine will be upgraded to convert stored hydrogen into electricity and thermal energy. The conversion of an existing infrastructure has the advantage of significantly lower costs and minimized lead time compared to a greenfield site.

Researchers at the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Materials Science and Technology Division have demonstrated novel NRL technologies developed for the recovery of CO 2 and hydrogen from seawater and their subsequent conversion to liquid fuels. The gases are then converted to liquid hydrocarbons by a metal catalyst in a reactor system.
