The current tax credit has a base of $2,500 and is replaced with a new $4,000 base credit as long as the EV has a battery of at least 10 kWh and can be plugged in and recharged. Each year that passes EVs are getting more efficient and the batteries themselves are producing more energy from smaller batteries and at a lower cost.
