The bill, HB 1204 / SB 5256 , requires all model year 2030 or later passenger and light-duty vehicles sold in Washington State to be electric. Electric vehicles are defined as “vehicles that use energy stored in rechargeable battery packs or in hydrogen that rely solely on electric motors for propulsion.”.

Lithium-ion batteries shuttle lithium ions back and forth between the anode and the cathode. The transition metal, typically cobalt, effectively stores and releases electrical energy when lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode and back. An open-access paper on their work is published in the journal Science Advances.
