A prototype plug-in hybrid retrofit kit is applied to a research vehicle’s rear wheels. After switching on the traction motors, the vehicle fuel economy increased from 50–100%. For the research vehicle, the system uses an 80V, 100A Li-ion phosphate battery pack with dual DC brushless motor controllers (one for each wheel motor).

A European-based Vauxhall Vivaro van retrofitted with Protean Electric’s electric wheel motors ( earlier post )applied in a through-the-road plug-in hybrid system (TTRH) has shown a more than three-fold improvement in fuel economy in hybrid mode over a conventional Vivaro on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

REV, a Vancouver, Canada company that converts Ford fleet vehicles into highway capable battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles ( earlier post ), has become the first Hymotion plug-in conversion kit dealer in Canada. The Hymotion L5 installation adds a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and charging system to the original Prius.

As the cost [of batteries] comes down, and the size grows, right in parallel, we are going to higher and higher power transfer. In many of these vehicles, the battery is relatively smaller. When the batteries are smaller [as in plug-in hybrids], you are not getting all the fuel economy benefit if the battery is not fully charged.

The 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona is a Detroit anomaly: it’s a passenger car in an age of trucks and SUVs, it’s battery-electric when U.S. Like the latest BMW sedans that offer either battery-electric or gasoline power in the same model, e.g. the 2024 BMW i7 and 2025 BMW i5 , the electric version is likely to be a better vehicle all around.
