There has been a lot of past research on the cost of vehicles and the cost of fuel, but these other operating costs haven’t been studied in quite the same detail before. There were gaps in the data, especially with respect to alternative fuel powertrains—electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles.

Propel Fuels, a retailer of clean, renewable fuels, announced a $20-million investment in the company. This funding will allow Propel to expand its network of alternative fuel stations into all major markets across California, supporting the state’s emissions reduction goals. Lux Research has investigated the trends of corporate financing of alternative fuels from oil majors, based on a non-exhaustive database of more than 1,000 deals and partnership engagements from 2000 through September, 2014. Shell shifted its shares in Codexis to Raizen, its ethanol JV with Cosan.

Well-to-Propeller GHG emissions results for marine alternative fuels. DNV GL has released a position paper on the future alternative fuel mix for global shipping. The global merchant fleet currently consumes around 330 million tonnes of fuel annually, 80-85 per cent of which is residual fuel with high sulfur content.

The US Army and Air Force are planning to develop 1 billion watts of renewable energy on their installations by 2025. Energy security drives the initiatives, Hammack said, adding that increased usage of renewable energy on military installations would enable them to operate even if local power grids go down.

Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory, with colleagues from Lawrence Berkeley, Oak Ridge, and National Renewable Energy labs, and the University of Tennessee, have published a comprehensive analysis of the total cost of ownership (TCO) for 12 sizes of vehicles ranging from compact sedans up to Class 8 tractors with sleeper cabs.
