In a vivid example of how a small geographic feature may have far-reaching impacts on climate, new research shows that water levels in the Bering Strait—which separates the US and Russia by only 90 kilometers (56 miles)—helped drive global climate patterns during ice age episodes dating back more than 100,000 years.

Rosneft and ExxonMobil will expand their cooperation under their 2011 Strategic Cooperation Agreement ( earlier post ) to include an additional approximately 600,000 square kilometers (150 million acres) of exploration acreage in the Russian Arctic and potential participation by Rosneft (or its affiliate) in the Point Thomson project in Alaska.

A fully instrumented well that will test innovative technologies for producing methane gas from hydrate deposits has been installed on the North Slope of Alaska. Methane hydrate consists of molecules of natural gas trapped in an open rigid framework of water molecules.

A new study led by Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology has found that the expansion of sugarcane crop in Brazil in areas previously occupied by other Brazilian crops cools the local climate.
