LanzaTech, a producer of low-carbon fuels and chemicals from waste gases, was awarded a $4-million grant by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) as one of the 15 REMOTE projects ( earlier post ) receiving a combined $34 million to find advanced biocatalyst technologies that can convert natural gas to liquid fuel for transportation.

The Cardamom field is 225 miles (362 kilometres) south-west of New Orleans, Louisiana, in water more than 2,700 feet (820 meters) deep. The Cardamom reservoir sits beneath thick layers of salt in rock more than four miles (6.4 kilometers) below the sea floor and went undetected by conventional seismic surveys.

The propane fleet will replace gasoline- and diesel-fueled vehicles used largely in rural areas in Louisiana and Oklahoma with other states pending. Operations will begin by mid-2014 and be completed early next year. The vehicles on these routes can travel up to 200 miles on a tank of propane.
