The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) are releasing the 2014 Fuel Economy Guide, providing consumers with a resource to identify and choose the most fuel efficient and low greenhouse gas emitting vehicles that meet their needs.

Chrysler’s Dodge brand introduced the 2014 Dodge Durango full-size SUV at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The three-row SUV is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission that improves fuel economy up to 9% (for the V-6 model) as well as a range of other enhancements.

With alternative fuel vehicles now approaching 1% of new vehicle production, however, they are in fact beginning to have a “ measurable and meaningful impact ” on overall new vehicle fuel economy and CO 2 emissions. In the analysis, EPA uses overall fuel economy in mpg equivalent (mpge) and tailpipe CO 2 emission values.

Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have quantified the fuel economy effects of some common driver practices and vehicle accessories or alterations—including underinflated tires, open windows, and rooftop and hitch-mounted cargo. They presented their results in a paper at SAE 2014 World Congress in Detroit.

2014 Pathfinder Hybrid. Nissan introduced the 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid at the New York International Auto Show. Fuel economy is estimated at 26 mpg (9.0 Estimated city fuel economy is 25 mpg (9.4 gallon fuel tank, the same as non-hybrid models, driving range is estimated at more than 526 miles (847 km).
