Neste Oil celebrated the grand opening of its NExBTL renewable diesel refinery in the Port of Rotterdam. The facility is capable of using Neste Oil’s wide feedstock base consisting of a variety of vegetable oils, by-products of vegetable oil refining (e.g. Earlier post.)

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) staff has released for public comment four new Tier 2 renewable diesel (RD) pathways using soy oil, used cooking oil, tallow, and corn oil at the Diamond Green facility in St. Used Cooking Oil. The standard provides that HC-HEFA-SPK fuel, the development of which was led by IHI Corporation, may be blended at up to 10% by volume with conventional jet fuel. Botryococcus features an exceptionally high growth rate and high hydrocarbon oil content; IHI’s fuel is based on the hydroprocessing of oil from Botryococcus braunii (Bb oil).

Other successful initiatives—highlighted in Ford’s 13th annual Sustainability Report—include reductions in water use, waste-to-landfill and CO 2 emissions as well as improvements in vehicle fuel economy and safety. The company also announced plans to reduce usage another 25% on a per-vehicle basis by 2016.

Axial Vector Energy Corporation (AVEC) has developed a new hybrid electric drive train comprising a small axial-type, multi-fuel AVEC engine ( earlier post ), an AVEC generator/motor and an all new electric clutch. engine and 100 kW generator—in 2009. The new clutch is more than 80% efficient with less than 1% slip.

Novozymes and its Chinese partner COFCO have entered a new partnership with major Chinese oil and energy company Sinopec to develop a commercial-scale process for producing cellulosic bioethanol from corn stover. Sinopec is the world’s third-largest oil refiner. China is the second-largest corn producer in the world, behind the US.
