EIA: E85 increasingly price-competitive with gasoline on energy content basis in parts of the Midwest; mileage per dollar

Green Car Congress

The retail price of E85 motor fuel (a gasoline blend with up to 85% ethanol), has fallen in recent months, notes the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Prices represent daily average observed E85 and regular gasoline prices at the same stations in the states of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio.

Study finds energy savings of PHEVs relative to HEVs dependent on charging coverage and daily VMT

Green Car Congress

A study based on a spatial and longitudinal travel dataset by a team from Lamar University, Iowa State University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that whether plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) have lower energy costs that conventional gasoline vehicles (CGVs) or hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) depends on charger coverage.

Edeniq and Flint Hills Resources Renewables establish joint development relationship for ethanol

Green Car Congress

Flint Hills Resources Renewables expects further adoption of Edeniq equipment to provide bolt-on technologies needed to extract sugar from a wide range of cellulosic (non-food) feedstocks to create cellulosic ethanol. Flint Hills Resources operates ethanol plants in Fairbank, Iowa Falls, Menlo and Shell Rock, Iowa.

USDA provides $91M loan guarantee to Cool Planet for biogasoline blendstock plant; biomass pyrolysis and catalytic conversion

Green Car Congress

Cool Planet’s biogasoline blendstock is 100% compatible with pump gasoline. The Cool Planet plant will produce approximately 8 million to 10 million gallons of high-octane, renewable gasoline blendstocks (reformate), as well the biochar, all made from sustainable wood residues. USDA to invest up to $100M to boost infrastructure for renewable fuel use; seeks to double number of higher blend ethanol fuel pumps

Green Car Congress

Higher blends of renewable fuel offer potential for increasing the use of renewable fuels in the US gasoline pool, but currently, the typical gas pump can deliver fuel containing a maximum of 10% ethanol. States that are able to provide greater than a one-to-one ratio in funding will receive higher consideration.

UC Davis ITS researchers take a detailed look at water consumption and withdrawal requirements for ethanol

Green Car Congress

While a number of studies have tired to assess the water consumption required for ethanol production, the results differ by orders of magnitude, with estimates ranging from 1.1 to 335 L/vehicle kilometer traveled (VKT) for Iowa and from 59 to 214 L/VKT for Nebraska. and from 0.29 L/VKT, respectively.

Simulations identify potential approach to reducing amount of rare earths required in permanent magnets

Green Car Congress

The rare earths have many unique physical and chemical properties which make them important, if not critical, components in a variety of energy technologies, noted Karl Gschneidner from Iowa State University in a separate presentation at TMS 2011. Conventional simulations were unable to cover this range of size until now.
