But they consume less or no gasoline. Much of US road infrastructure is financed by taxing gasoline. Urban and coastal types with high-MPG cars and smug EV grins? Gasoline Consumption Declining? This is the pickle. Hence EVs are not paying their way. Not so much. seconds, not so much.

Per gallon federal gasoline and diesel taxes collected at the pump are deposited into the federal Highway Trust Fund (HTF). By law, these excises are the primary revenue source for financing road, bridge and transit projects. The less motor fuel used by drivers, the less revenue generated for improvements financed through the HTF.

During the late innings of the ICE-age (as in the Internal Combustion Engine age) it has become clear that feeding gasoline and diesel to the next billion new cars is not going to be easy, or cheap. By contrast, at 25 miles per $3 gallon of gasoline, those miles cost 12 cents each. New cars in 2015 get 25 mpg.)
