The 34 kW, 150 N·m water-cooled Crank-Integrated Starter Generator (C-ISG) starts the engine, charges the battery and can also support the combustion engine with electric boost power. The rear drive utilizes a 65 kW peak, 240 N·m peak electric machine with a water-cooled stator. T8 Twin Engine AWD powertrain.

As part of the SCR technology, exhaust stream emissions were dosed with a mist of a urea substance, commonly known as “AdBlue,” which converted NO x into nitrogen, water, and small amounts of carbon dioxide. The dosing strategy varied injection levels of AdBlue into the exhaust system depending on whether the vehicle was being tested.

The 2017 Prius Prime offers an EPA-estimated 133 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent)—a substantial 26% enhancement over its predecessor model, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, as a result of greater battery capacity and the improved hybrid system. The EPA-estimated all-electric range is up to 25 miles at up to 84 mph.

With more than 100 miles on the vehicle, the range and durability has been shown. A conventional vehicle with a gasoline engine would use $9 of fuel to go 100 miles. There is no need to transport or store hydrogen, avoiding another layer of complexity. The range increased 300% using a real world 2.3-mile worth of fuel.
