The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced more than $13 million in funding for the advancement of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. These projects, selected through collaborative research consortia, will leverage industry, university and laboratory expertise to accelerate advanced hydrogen storage technologies and fuel cell performance and durability.

With details about a fatal May 7 crash of a Tesla Model S operating on Autopilot continuing to garner news coverage, more crashes with Autopilot engaged appear to be surfacing. Most notably, the NHTSA has said it will investigate a crash on Friday, July 1, in which a Tesla Model X ran off the road and rolled over. The owner says it was operating.

General Motors and its joint ventures had record June deliveries in China of 273,563 units, which was up 11.2% on an annual basis. The Buick, Cadillac and Baojun brands had their best June ever. The strong June performance enabled GM to set a first half record for deliveries in China. Demand was up 5.3% from the first six months of 2015 to 1,810,476 units.

While reported sales of new electric cars remain relatively stagnant, used electric cars seem to be turning into a hot commodity. Lower prices are making used electric cars—along with hybrids and plug-in hybrids—much more attractive to consumers. Which means they're being driven off used-car lots far faster than the average gasoline.

Audi received a “Digital Economy Award” (DEA.2016) from Initiative Deutschland Digital (IDD) in Bonn this Tuesday, taking first place in the category Enterprise 4.0. Paced by the Chevrolet Volt, Canada may have had its first-ever month in which 1,000 plug-in electric vehicle were sold. Volt sales continued to soar in Canada during June, with GM's electric flagship topping 300 for the first time. Factoring in population ratios, this would be roughly equivalent to a 3,000-sale month in the United States, a feat.

Ford Motor vehicle sales in the first half in China for Ford, Lincoln and its joint ventures reached 577,097 vehicles, a 6% increase compared to the same time last year. Vehicle sales for Ford and its joint ventures in the first half were up 5% over last year to 564,647, with June accounting for 85,105 units sold. June results were 3% higher than June 2015.

Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation, has developed a first in piston cooling technology by creating a sealed-for-life coolant chamber within the crown of its market-leading Monosteel heavy-duty diesel piston. Branded EnviroKool, the technology allows pistons to run safely at crown temperatures in excess of 100 °C higher than today’s limits, working where appropriate in conjunction with high oxidation resistant steel alloys and protective crown coatings.

The total number of natural gas refueling stations globally will reach almost 39,300 locations by 2026, according to a new report from Navigant Research. Since late 2014, the production of crude oil has outpaced demand, triggering a sustained collapse in world oil prices, which have remained mostly below $50 per barrel. As a result, these low prices have put pressure on the market for natural gas vehicles (NGVs) and the corresponding refueling infrastructure.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has outlined plans to crackdown on the most polluting vehicles, including an additional £10 (US$13) per day charge for the most polluting vehicles and an extended Ultra-Low Emission Zone. The public has until 29 July 2016 to provide feed back on the first round of the Clean Air Plan consultation. A more detailed consultation will take place later this year and some measures could be implemented as early as 2017.

An international team of researchers has demonstrated a new way to increase the robustness and energy storage capability of a particular class of “lithium-rich” cathode materials by using a carbon dioxide-based gas mixture to create oxygen vacancies at the material’s surface. About 90 people die each day from motor vehicle crashes in the United States, resulting in the highest death rate among 19 high-income comparison countries, according to the latest Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
