A DIY Calorie Counter More Accurate Than a Smartphone

Cars That Think

Using a I2C expansion board [top middle], the IMUs feed data into a Raspberry Pi [bottom middle] powered by a USB battery pack [left]. Although the Pi is bigger and has a higher power draw than, say, a Teensy board , we chose it because it was easy to stream data wirelessly from the Pi and monitor it during testing and calibration.

Energy Harvesting for Wearable Technology Steps Up

Cars That Think

Fortunately, though, at wearables’ modest power budgets, energy is effectively everywhere. But we do actually need that energy to be generated,” says Alper Bozkurt, who with Veena Misra codirects the Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST) at North Carolina State University. milliwatts.

Can This DIY Rocket Program Send an Astronaut to Space?

Cars That Think

meter-tall Nexø II rocket was powered by a bipropellant engine designed and constructed by the Copenhagen Suborbitals team. That successful mission in August 2018 was a huge step toward our goal of sending an amateur astronaut to the edge of space aboard one of our DIY rockets. Even more important, it came back down in one piece.

Green Car Congress

Power steering is electric and as a result we don’t need to check the power steering oil level as there isn’t any. During reversing, the Prius is powered only by the electric motor. The gasoline engine only runs in reversing to power the batteries. Sometimes the engine water pump might leak.

How I turned a shipping container into a solar off-grid charging station with A/C

Baua Electric

Between my electric bikes, e-motorcycles, e-ATVs, electric tractors, and a few other things I’m probably forgetting, having a weather-sealed, solar-powered off-grid charging shed would be a big benefit. There are many ways to skin a cat, and even more ways to add solar power to a shipping container. Here’s how I did it.

5 phase SRM motors

DIY Electric Car

I don't think the ambient temperature matters much, because all modern EV motors run high enough power density that they need active (normally liquid, often oil) cooling; their internal operating temperature can get pretty high, even in a temperate climate. Both rotor designs experience heating.

Search for Buried Treasure With This DIY Magnetometer

Cars That Think

Power comes from an external USB battery. I’ve not used my DIY magnetometer to search for any submarines or alien monoliths, but I did test it using a steel hammer, which affects the readings in an obvious way when placed within about a meter of the sensor board. The third sensor would thus track the total-field value.
