A team from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology of South Korea has demonstrated the feasibility of using proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) reactors electrocatalytically to reduce biomass-derived oxygenates into renewable fuels and chemicals.

There is still a lack of new redox-active carbon dioxide carriers for effective electrochemical carbon dioxide capture from such point sources as flue gas. We intend to build an electrochemical modular system as a platform for a continuous conversion process of simulated flue gas to pure liquid fuels.

The zeolite catalyst then converts these hydrogenated products into light olefins and aromatic hydrocarbons in a yield as much as three times higher than that produced with the pure pyrolysis oil. Zeolite catalysts convert the biomass feedstocks into aromatics and olefins, which can fit easily into the existing infrastructure.
