Alternative fuel technologies have been embraced in Seattle, after the city was awarded a $1.4million grant from the US Department of Energy to enhance its fleet of green vehicles. It will also pick up $500,000 for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) may be the emission that most car manufacturers are desperately trying to drive down, but even it has its uses and now one company is hoping for funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to target its beneficial use. They may include plant efficiency projects.

The US state of California has been granted a waiver request enabling it to enforce its own greenhouse gas emissions standard for new cars starting with the current model year. The end point of the two standards in 2016 is roughly the same - the MY2016 new vehicle fleet is approximately 243g/CO2 per mile, around 36.6mpg.

Algenol submitted a formal request for a grant from the US Department of Energy last week with the intention of building a refinery that would be based at Dow’s Freeport site in Texas. The CO2 is supplied to the algae in the photo-bioreactors and serves as a carbon source for the ethanol produced.
