The fully electric Volvo C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge models have been updated for the 2024 model year to offer increased range ( earlier post ). Range improvements come thanks to two new powertrains offered on both the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge. Exterior updates also help contribute to the efficiency gains.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge, the company’s first fully electric vehicle, will carry an MSRP of $53,990 when it arrives in US showrooms later this year. The purchase of an XC40 Recharge may qualify for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500. When they become available, over-the-air updates will keep the XC40 Recharge evolving over time.

As part of a new package of product updates, Volvo Cars has improved both the range (WLTP) and charging for the all-electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge compared with the outgoing model year, increasing range by as much as 60 kilometers on some variants. An updated all-wheel drive variant.

Volvo has been selling EVs under the Recharge name for a while now, but the automaker is shifting to new branding for its latest models. The XC40 Recharge will be sold as the EX40 for the 2025 model year, leaving the XC name for upcoming electrified gas models.

In a new study published in Physical Review Letters , researchers from Korea’s Institute for Basic Science ( IBS ) suggest that quantum charging of EV batteries will cut the charging time from ten hours to three minutes at home. Currently, cars can take about 10 hours to recharge fully at home.
