Effective immediately, the United Kingdom has announced it will no longer supply EV grants for most consumer purchases. The grant system, launched in 2011 as part of a system to kick start the EV sector in the UK, has ended for most consumers, only leaving grants available for vehicles in niche and commercial uses.

Take up of grants for the purchase of electric and hybrid cars rose by nearly 20% in the UK in the first half of 2012 compared with the same period in 2011. The claims represent a rise of 134 on the 680 claims made under the Plug-in Car Grant in the first half of 2011.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed details of the financial incentives that will be made available to buyers of electric cars from January 2011. Cars will be discounted at the point of purchase and the subsidy claimed by the manufacturer to provide a straightforward process for the consumer.
