When wind or solar power is available, the charging rate can be increased to expand the use of renewable energy in the grid. During peak periods, the flow of energy can be delayed or slowed to shift the charging load off-peak—minimizing localized grid stress and ensuring service reliability.

German manufacturers have accumulated a great deal of excellent fundamental technology in regard to renewable energies and battery power. Next-generation lithium-ion battery power could allow for powering cars with clean energy from solar cells and from wind turbines. We have chosen to work with BMW in this area first.

Imagine for a moment that the world had rejected wind and solar energy, and instead decided to wait for a hydrogen fusion research program to reach fruition. Fortunately for the world, wind and solar are growing rapidly, while hydrogen fusion research remains speculative at best. The 2008 Toyota Prius is 242 g/mi today.

The Good About half our electricity comes from coal, and that will change, at best, slowly as we move to renewables. And ultimately, you can get no cleaner car than an electric car using wind or solar generated electricity. It should be perhaps our last fuel of choice regardless of how it's used.

We chose the solar-powered Park n Ride just off 80. In a Prius or Civic Hybrid at 50mpg, the trip would have cost about $30 in gas, tolls and parking in Sacto. And due to all our efforts, the grid is getting even cleaner and more renewable. Plenty of public charging in what's come to be called Voltageville.
