EIA ups total shale oil resource estimate by 13% to 419B barrels, shale gas by 4% to 7576 Tcf

Green Car Congress

The addition of four countries—Chad, Kazakhstan, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—to a previous assessment covering 42 countries has resulted in a 13% increase in the global assessed total resource estimate for shale oil and a 4% increase for shale gas. GECF: more than a quarter of 2050 natural gas supply untapped

Green Car Congress

According to the latest available figures from the GECF Global Gas Outlook 2050, natural gas production in the Central Asian Republic is set to increase by 78% to reach the level of more than 141 billion cubic metres (bcm) by 2050, at a remarkable annual growth rate of 1.9%. Yet-to-find (YTF) resources will contribute to around 30% of the total production of natural gas worldwide by 2050, according to Yury Sentyurin, the Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

US EIA reminder: Strait of Hormuz world’s most important oil chokepoint; almost 20% of oil traded worldwide

Green Car Congress

Chokepoints are narrow channels along widely used global sea routes, some so narrow that restrictions are placed on the size of vessel that can navigate through them. They are a critical part of global energy security due to the high volume of oil traded through their narrow straits. The Strait is located between Oman and Iran, and connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

France’s IFPEN studying industrial potential of onshore sources of natural hydrogen

Green Car Congress

IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) has become one of the first global research centers actively to investigate onshore natural hydrogen emissions after the discovery of offshore sources of the gas in the 1970s. It is often associated with methane, occasionally nitrogen and, in some places, economically viable quantities of helium (at a time when demand for this rare gas with numerous high-tech applications are stretching global supplies to their limit).

US Mapping Project Highlights Potential for Mineral Carbonation for CO2 Sequestration

Green Car Congress

The US survey is the first of what Lackner hopes will become a global mapping effort. Juerg Matter, a scientist at Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and his colleague Peter Kelemen are currently researching peridotite formations in Oman, which they say could be used to mineralize as much as 4 billion tons of CO 2 a year, or about 12% of the world’s annual output.
