Eventually GM took the ultimate step, and created a whole brand just to compete with economic imports for youthful customers when it created Saturn.

Methanol-to-gasoline process flow diagram. The resulting methanol would be blended with crude and transported via the trans-Alaska oil pipeline to Valdez, where it would be extracted from the oil and processed via Methanol-to-Gasoline technology into gasoline. Honda beat everybody to the production gasoline-electric hybrid game in the United States, putting the Insight in showrooms in 1999. Toyota followed with the Prius a year later, but it took GM until 2006 to introduce its first true gasoline-electric hybrid here. The Vue's platform outlived Saturn and still lives today, though.

At the recent SAE 2009 World Congress in Detroit, General Motors engineers presented the first front-wheel-drive (FWD) iteration of their two-mode hybrid transaxle, termed the 2MT70 ( earlier post ), scheduled for its first application in the Saturn 2009 VUE 2-Mode Hybrid light sport-utility vehicle later this year ( earlier post ).

With rising gasoline prices, I believe the demand for freeway capable electric vehicles is going to increase over the next few years. The Saturn came up a distant second, but everyone agreed that the Civic was the best. This project started about a month ago when I became co-chair of the Oregon Electric Vehicles Association.
