They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G. For the utilities, it promised an economical way of meeting rising demand for electricity. AC Propulsion’s experiment was timely.

In 2017, Tesla Model S had the farthest EPA-rated range for an all-electric vehicle, at 315 miles. In 2016 there was one charging plug for about every 6 electric cars.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is awarding $100 million in Economic Recovery Act funding to 43 transit agencies for projects to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from both vehicles and facilities. The project includes quick-charging stations at this terminal layover in route to recharge bus batteries.
