Federal tax credits for electric vehicles in the United States are complicated, especially with new changes for 2023. Under the current version of the Section 30D Clean Vehicle Credit (CVC), there are specific criteria that both the vehicle and taxpayer must meet. It does not act as a rebate (until 2024).

Results of a study released Tuesday by the American Energy Alliance found that most voters object to tax credits for electric cars. Tellingly, the poll also shows that the public generally supports electric cars themselves.

California buyers of the Ford Focus Electric will be able to receive up to $10,000 in tax credits ($2,500 state, $7,500 federal) and enjoy high-occupancy vehicle lane (HOV) access after the car was just approved for California’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Program ( CVRP ). 3 and 7, respectively, for the worst congestion in the US.

Conversely, 39% of respondents would only buy an EV if gasoline-powered vehicles were no longer available. Americans cite too few charging points and too high upfront cost as the leading barriers to buying an electric vehicle. US respondents are most likely to buy an EV if the government offers a federal/state tax credit.

Ford is pricing the new C-MAX Energi—expected to offer 15 class-exclusive features, a 550-mile (885 km) total range and more than 20 miles (32 km) of electric-only range ( earlier post )—at $33,745. Its eligibility for a $3,750 federal tax credit drops that to $29,995.

For the first time, two electric vehicles with a 500-mile driving range (two variants of the Lucid Air) sit at the top of the guide’s 10 most fuel-efficient vehicles. The top 10 “fuel sippers” among 2022 models in the new guide are all-electric vehicles offering a minimum of 111 miles per gallon-equivalent fuel economy.
