EEA reports sharp decrease in CO2 emissions of new cars in Europe in 2020

According to the EEA’s provisional data, the average emissions of new passenger cars registered in the European Union (EU), Iceland, Norway, and the United Kingdom in 2020 were 107.8 New car emissions were increasing as recently as two years ago, but the sharp drop last year shows that carmakers respond to CO2 standards.

EEA final data shows average car CO2 emissions in Europe kept increasing in 2019

EEA: no improvements on average CO2 emissions from new cars registered in 2017 in Europe

Further improvements need to be achieved by manufacturers to reach the 2021 target of 95 g CO 2 /km. Registrations increased in all EU Member States except Finland, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Since 2010, when monitoring started under current EU legislation, official emissions have decreased by 22 g CO 2 /km (16 %).
