With synthetic diesel fuels of the EN15940 standard, CO 2 emissions can be reduced by up to 100% compared to fossil diesel. Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO or renewable diesel), which is already commercially available today, reduces CO 2 emissions by up to 90%. DB Cargo also uses HVO in other locomotives in its fleet.

With 85 percent lower CO 2 emissions than with conventional fossil fuels, the contribution to climate protection is enormous. The two ships, which are both 180 meters long, are each powered by a MAN marine diesel with more than 19,000 PS (14,220 kW). We are the first automaker to make widespread use of this fuel.

The fuel, jointly developed by Volkswagen, the Coburg University and other project partners, contains up to 33% renewable components based exclusively on residual and waste materials and enables CO 2 savings of at least 20% compared to conventional diesel thanks to the use of biofuels.
