They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G. For the utilities, it promised an economical way of meeting rising demand for electricity. AC Propulsion’s experiment was timely.

The State of Maryland followed in the footsteps of California today by banning all new gas vehicle sales by the model year 2035. Maryland laws already exist that require the State to match California’s vehicle emissions programs. Car exhaust is the largest source of greenhouse gas in the State of Maryland.

Spiking demand for electric heat collided with supply problems created by frozen natural-gas equipment and below-average wind-power production. The conference was sold out; it was also essentially a PowerPoint-free zone; the basic format relied heavily on brief introductory remarks from sets of speakers representing the diverse stakeholders, followed by questions from attendees. The impact from plug-in electric vehicles on the grid could be very substantial.
