In a study published in the journal Energy Economics , MIT researchers have found that a fuel economy standard is at least six to fourteen times less cost effective than a fuel tax when targeting an identical reduction in cumulative gasoline use (20% by 2050).

Based on the results of the study, CAR believes the economic risk to the auto industry connected to mandating permanent fuel economy standards in the long run is “ very serious ” The group recommends periodic review to assess the rate of technology development and cost reduction of advanced technologies leading up to 2025.

The survey, “Unplugged: Electric vehicle realities versus consumer expectations,” canvassed more than 13,000 consumers in 17 countries across the Americas, Asia and Europe and revealed a general desire among consumers to buy electric vehicles, but a strong unwillingness to compromise on key performance criteria and especially price.
