Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory, with colleagues from Lawrence Berkeley, Oak Ridge, and National Renewable Energy labs, and the University of Tennessee, have published a comprehensive analysis of the total cost of ownership (TCO) for 12 sizes of vehicles ranging from compact sedans up to Class 8 tractors with sleeper cabs.

UPS announced an update to 125 Workhorse E-GEN series hybrid electric delivery trucks that improve fuel economy as part of the company’s broader Rolling Laboratory approach. 4-cylinder engine; charging capability remains the same, as does the electric range. The smaller engine will improve fuel economy, however.

Cylinder Deactivation leverages Jacobs’ well-established componentry to disable engine valves in selected cylinders allowing a large engine to have the fuel economy of a smaller engine. Also, higher exhaust temperatures in operating cylinders maintain aftertreatment temperatures at low load conditions and start-up.
