California ARB: GHG emissions fell below 1990 levels for first time in 2016; down 13% from 2004 peak; transportation emissions up 2%

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that greenhouse gas emissions in California in 2016 fell below 1990 levels for the first time since emissions peaked in 2004—a reduction roughly equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road or saving 6 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

Study finds farms a major source of fine-particulate air pollution

Emissions from farms outweigh all other human sources of fine-particulate air pollution in much of the United States, Europe, Russia and China, according a new study published in Geophysical Research Letters , a journal of the American Geophysical Union. The environment committee of the European Parliament approved a draft law setting out a new CO 2 target for cars of 95g CO 2 /km (153 g/mile) by 2020, down from 130 gCO 2 /km (209 g/mile) in 2015. The draft also sets indicative targets for post-2020 CO 2 emissions in the range of 68-78 g/km (109-126 g/mile) from 2025.
