More interesting still, China sold more EVs the previous year than the whole world combined in 2019. Li-ion batteries have been around since 1991, but only in 2008 were applied to cars. In 2008, the Tesla Roadster hit the road, ushering in a new era for EVs. Maybe not as fast as the gas price, but they’re rising, nonetheless.

AFP Some 21m electric bicycles were sold in China in 2008, according to Frank Jamerson, author of Electric Bikes Worldwide Reports. Even taking that into account, though, an electric bicyle wins out handsomely in the emission competition with a petrol-driven car, as it is 15-20 times more efficient. The figure has doubled since 2005.
