The vehicle makes its first appearance as Ford prepares 20 PHEV Transits for the 12-month fleet customer trial in London that begins in late 2017. The battery pack is a compact liquid-cooled lithium-ion design located under the load floor, preserving the full cargo volume offered by the standard Transit Custom van.

Equipmake, a commercial vehicle electrification specialist, and Spanish coachbuilder Beulas, are joining forces with Go-Ahead, London’s largest bus operator, to start in-service trials of the new Jewel E double-decker electric bus on the capital’s streets in Q1 2022. The Jewel E is powered by Equipmake’s Zero Emission Drivetrain (ZED).

Based on the Ford Transit, the Smith Edison is powered by a 90 kW electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Edison can typically achieve 80 miles on a full charge, and can be fully recharged in as little as three hours. Smith is one of three companies that are supplying a total of 70 electric LCVs in Phase One.

This modular and scaleable battery drivetrain, developed at Equipmake’s HQ in Snetterton, is the same technology also used in Equipmake’s new London-specification bus, the double decker Jewel E. When the battery is depleted at the end of a complete duty cycle, it can be recharged at the depot overnight via a CSS2 DC charging point.
