A research team at Monash University (Australia) led by Professor Dan Li of the Department of Materials Engineering has developed a new strategy to engineer graphene-based supercapacitors (SC), resulting in an energy density of 60 Wh/liter—comparable to lead-acid batteries and around 12 times higher than commercially available SCs.

PowerGenix, the developer of high-performance, automotive Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) batteries, has entered into an innovation contract with PSA Peugeot Citroën Automobiles under which PSA will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the use of PowerGenix’s NiZn batteries as a replacement for lead-acid in stop-start vehicles.

NiZn offers superior energy and power density compared to lead-acid and Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and avoids the high costs and safety issues associated with Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. In addition, a starter alternator motor is used to supplement the internal combustion engine with some level of power assist during acceleration.

At 48 volts, a VTES electric supercharger will transform 7kW of battery power into a highly boosted charge of air for downsized gasoline and diesel engines. There will be no torque deficit or other tradeoffs from essential engine downsizing and higher gearing, which now dominates the development of internal combustion engines.

The researchers estimated that, if applied to the task of generating electricity, all of the engines in the U.S. They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid.

A question about bidirectional charging was also asked. Elon Musk noted that bidirectional charging is not that useful since Powerwall is better. The service’s rollout in Texas will include $30 charging at night for customers who sign up for Tesla Electric. He estimates 10 models or so should be enough.

ARPA-E’s RANGE program seeks to improve EV driving range and reduce vehicle costs by re-envisioning the total EV battery system, rather than working to increase the energy density of individual battery cells. EnZinc’s porous, sponge-like zinc component prevents battery failure and enables high-power charge and discharge.
