SF Motors to acquire EV battery module startup InEVit, headed by Martin Eberhard

SF Motors, a Silicon Valley electric vehicle (EV) company and subsidiary of Shanghai-based Sokon Industry Group, has acquired InEVit Inc., an electric vehicle (EV) battery modularization startup headed by former Tesla CEO Martin Eberhard. InEVit has developed and patented a novel EV chassis architecture, battery module design innovations, and manufacturing techniques that it says will allow the EV industry to scale up the manufacturing of cost-and-feature-competitive vehicles rapidly.

Visedo introducing new SRPM motor design for buses; 10% increase in power, better cooling

Finnish manufacturer Visedo is unveiling a new electric motor design at BusWorld 2017 that is optimized for the bus market and ready for mass manufacture. With the new S-model PowerDRUM, Visedo has achieved a 10% increase in power output as well as better cooling. Visedo says that the upgrades enable it to offer the highest efficiency in the market across the RPM range, with the Visedo system being 31% more efficient than average.

ICCT study finds GHGs from shipping on the rise

Emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from global shipping are on the rise again, according to a new study released by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). Overall, the study found that maritime fuel consumption increased from 291 to 298 million tonnes (+2.4%) from 2013 to 2015, compared to a 7% increase in shipping transport work.

Cummins buys Brammo electric-drivetrain group for future electric semi

Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines to power four new LNG carriers

The technology group Wärtsilä, through its joint venture company CSSC Wärtsilä Engine (Shanghai) Co (CWEC), has been contracted to deliver 16 engines for four new LNG carrier vessels being built at the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in China. The order was booked in August 2017. Each of the four 174,000 m 3 capacity vessels will be fitted with four Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel generating sets running primarily on LNG fuel to provide the ships with auxiliary power.

Northvolt ( earlier post ) announced a partnership with the two Swedish municipalities Skellefteå and Västerås for the establishment of Europe’s largest lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant. The construction of Northvolt’s factory is scheduled to begin during the second half of 2018. Once the first quarter is completed in 2020, it will produce 8 GWh worth of battery capacity per year.

LG Electronics is teaming up with Qualcomm jointly to develop a range of next-generation connected car solutions. The two companies will also establish a joint research center in South Korea to develop 5G for vehicle and C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) technologies.
