These reductions have come from strong efforts to reduce on-road vehicle emissions, especially diesel particulate matter. The major sources of methane in California are livestock (~30% of the state’s methane emissions), followed by landfills and oil and gas production. CO 2 remains in the atmosphere for up to a century.

A study by researchers at Lund University in Sweden found that Swedish biofuels produce between 65 and 148% less greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline and diesel, even when direct and indirect land use changes are taken into account. Co-production of biogas and ethanol from wheat was also analyzed. 68% from biodiesel (RME).

Mikhail Chester and Arpad Horvath inventoried on-road, rail, and air travel to determine energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and criteria air pollutant (CAP) emissions (excluding PM, lead, and ozone due to lack of data). Peak urban diesel buses showed the best overall energy consumption and GHG emissions per PKT.
