What the Corsair PHEV does, or should do, is open the brand to a new audience who will consider buying a Lincoln for the first time.

At the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volvo Car Corporation will unveil the Volvo XC60 gasoline-electric Plug-in Hybrid Concept. In February 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, Volvo introduced the diesel-electric V60 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) to go on sale in Europe later this year. Earlier post.)

In a paper being presented at WCX SAE World Congress Experience in Detroit this week, a team from MIT is proposing the use of a flex-fuel gasoline-alcohol engine approach for a series-hybrid powertrain for long-haul Class 8 trucks. We think that the way to enable the use of electricity in these vehicles is with a plug-in hybrid.

Ford’s 2017 Fusion Energi—incorporating enhancements announced earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show ( earlier post )—can travel 610 miles (982 km) on a full tank of gas and battery charge according to EPA estimates to be posted to fueleconomy.gov—the highest combined range of any plug-in hybrid sold in the US.

The revamped 7-seater SUV offers diverse drivetrain technologies (gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid), intelligent muti-material lightweight construction, and a full range of connectivity and electronics features.

The XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show. The direction for the US was underscored by the unveiling of the XC60 gasoline-electric Plug-in Hybrid Concept at the show. The rear axle of the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is driven by an electric motor producing 70 hp (52 kW) and 200 N·m (148 lb-ft).
