AFOSR and NASA Launch First Test Rocket Fueled by Aluminum-Ice Propellant

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and NASA recently launched the first test rocket using an environmentally-friendly, safe propellant comprising nanoscale aluminum powder and water ice (ALICE). They found that the pressure exponent for ALICE was 0.73, which is approximately a factor of two larger than Al/water mixtures.

NREL researchers report on two approaches to upgrading biomass pyrolysis oil for hydrocarbon fuels

At last month’s World Renewable Energy Forum 2012 in Denver, Colorado, researchers from the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory presented papers on two different approaches to upgrade pyrolysis oils to hydrocarbon fuels or fuel intermediates.
