The DC-DC converter is still working fine, so the car is actually quite convenient to drive. I called around to several Porsche repair shops and finally found Dan Hall's Auto Machine. I haven't touched my gasoline car in two weeks now. Stay tuned.

In the process of attaching cables to the auxiliary battery, I got a click from the key-switch relay on the right and the DC-DC converter turned on (red light). Also, the instructions for the DC kit may not apply to the AC kit. Also, the instructions for the DC kit may not apply to the AC kit.

They run on 48 volts and the company sells them as a kit for about $3500. He built the DC version of the Electro Automotive kit awhile back and challenged me to a drag duel at Nedra next week. With batteries and additional items, the final cost is around $5000. Not bad for something that has a top speed of 50mph.

I've already added the 3-hole cap-plug provided in the kit. After cutting all the tape that bound the engine compartment cables together, I slid on the three-hole cap-plug from the kit and bonded it in place with silicone sealant. This tells us when to stop pulling the cables through.

Over the past few weeks I've been trying to contact the folks at Electro Automotive to get the status of the EV 914 kit. They finally responded last night and apparently they're completely buried under the demand for EV conversion kits. He got one of the earlier DC motor kits for the 914 from Electro Automotive.

In the process, the DC-DC converter turned on (indicated by red LED) and then slowly decayed to the off state. of the DC instructions, it drives the keyswitch relay coil instantaneously with 12 volts, energizing the coil. I spent the evening debugging the small sparking issue I ran into yesterday. The moment of truth!

One of the other 914 kit converters questioned why the accessory battery couldn't stay in the original tray, but I decided to remove it anyway and have the accessory battery up in the front trunk near the DC/DC converter. Taking out the hood latch was a bit tougher.

If the 12V battery is dead, you need a small 12V battery (9V would probably work) to activate the DC-DC converter relay to bootstrap the 12V charging process. If I don't get elected co-chair next Thursday, I'm going to start an open-source EV conversion kit sub-group within the OEVA. I'm getting more involved with the OEVA club.

A modification of the prior strap is basically what is suggested in the DC kit instructions. It turns out that the only copper interconnect that fit right out of the kit bag was the completely flat bar with two holes. I found a funny shaped link in the kit, but could simply not get it to fit anywhere in the system.

I wasn't seeing a huge voltage drop, so I didn't believe the controller, at least from a DC-current point of view. The kit requires the 12V accessory battery to run the exhaust fans while the car charges overnight, so I altered the circuit to use an external 12V laptop supply instead so I wouldn't drain the accessory battery.

Kia doesn’t quote a maximum charge power when using faster DC charging , instead cheekily pointing out it can be charged from a 350kW charger (as any other EV capable of DC charging can). There’s also a strong suite of active safety equipment, starting with tyre pressure sensors (there’s no spare tyre, only a tyre repair kit).

On minor disappointment is that the cable supplied in the kit is #2 gauge cable. I suppose the AC kit doesn't require as much current as the DC kit, but I'll take all the efficiency I can get at this point. He converted his 914 with the Electro Auto DC kit and challenged me to a duel at NEDRA.

Here is the 9-in-1 wire for the AC kit pulled through the grommet between the passenger compartment and the fuel compartment. Here's the wiring specified in the DC instructions (supposedly the same for AC) on the relay block. I finally got to work on the electric car again today. The next major task is wiring up the front compartment.

It’s mind-blowing, if not quite in the re-wire brain territory of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. If you want to keep the tyre mobility kit and power cable bags in the boot, this also eats into space. The ton is up in 3.5 seconds, which let’s not forget is supercar rapid…. in an EV that’s a porky 2185kg. It’s all highway home from here.

Today, I installed the last kit piece that I have from Electro Automotive: the motor controller wiring harness. This means I could rectify a dedicated 120V AC outlet to generate about 160V DC to try and spin the motor. Here's the harness plugged into the controller and fed through the two-inch computer grommet from the last blog entry.
