The projects are located in North Carolina, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Georgia, and Quebec, Canada (through collaboration with a company based in Lexington, Ky.). This integrated capture and conversion process will be used to produce a number of different chemicals that could replace petroleum-derived products.

If the potential of the sites is eventually fulfilled, they could safely and permanently store combined CO 2 emissions equivalent to that produced by more than 11 million passenger vehicles annually or from the electricity use of more than 7 million homes for one year, according to Environmental Protection Agency conversion data.

The Department of Energy is working with industry, universities, national laboratories, and other groups to develop technologies capable of harnessing these resources to generate environmentally sustainable, cost-competitive power. The goal is to develop an optimal generator for current energy conversion. DOE Funding: $160,000.

The project will result in expanded availability of alternative fuels with 17 new CNG and E85 fueling stations and 63 electric vehicle charging stations. Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.
