Ricardo’s “deep” Miller cycle concept: Magma

Green Car Congress

In its new report on downsized and boosted gasoline engine technologies ( earlier post ) the ICCT highlighted Ricardo’s work on an “extreme” Miller cycle concept with high (13:1) compression ratio (CR) and central direct injection in a downsized boosted engine. A long exhaust stroke then extracts maximum efficiency.

Concept: Downsized and Supercharged Hybrid Pneumatic Engine for 30%+ Reduction in Fuel Consumption

Green Car Congress

Schematic of downsized and supercharged four-stroke hybrid pneumatic spark injection engine. The reduction in fuel consumption is obtained mainly through enabling the effective use of a heavily downsized engine, rather than from regenerative efficiency. The hardware concept. PSA to commercialize SwRI-developed Dedicated-EGR technology in high-efficiency gasoline engines by 2018

Green Car Congress

The D-EGR concept dedicates one (or more) cylinders to EGR production and fuel reforming. In the inaugural study reported in an SAE paper in 2009 (2009-01-0694), SwRI ran a 4-cylinder engine with cylinder 1 exhausting directly to the intake manifold, leading to a constant 25% EGR level. Opel presents new midsize gasoline engine at Aachen Colloquium; fuel consumption down 13%, torque and power up 33%

Green Car Congress

Opel revealed more details about its new mid-size gasoline engine family at the Aachen Colloquium in Germany. For mass reduction the midsize gasoline engine features a two-piece crankcase design, supported at the lower end by a die-cast aluminum bedplate. The engine retains the proven concept of a turbine-integrated exhaust manifold.

ADEPT project to apply gasoline engine HyBoost system to diesel; 48V architecture; full hybrid fuel economy at much lower cost

Green Car Congress

The Ricardo-led Advanced Diesel Electric Powertrain (ADEPT) project will apply 48V “intelligent electrification” concepts, mild hybridization and waste heat recovery in a Ford Focus diesel demonstrator. It is capable of operating in exhaust temperatures up to 850 °C, at speeds up to 60,000 rpm and delivering a peak power of 2 kW (@12V).
