We'll be interested in how much carbon-based fuels such as coal and natural gas went into the electrical energy that charged our batteries. This environmental info might even take into account the pollution that came from building the solar arrays or wind farms that supplied renewable energy.

The story about China’s coal-reliant electricity production resulting in electric vehicles (EVs) becoming more polluting than combustion cars (see story) may have been twisted by some unscrupulous media to imply that all EVs, wherever they are used, are a far-worse for the environment than oil-drinkers (see the usual suspects for more info).

Coal – the cheapest option and the only energy source with low-cost storage in the shape of a big heap of the stuff – was ruled out as too carbon-rich, even though countries such as China are currently building scores of new coal-fired plants. Gas is the only answer. So that leaves gas with the task of keeping the lights on.

Clueless ministers are scrambling to shore up a key part of the country’s net zero carbon strategy after the findings in a peer-reviewed study suggested that even hydrogen produced using allegedly low-emission methods can be more polluting than gas or coal.

We have closed most of the coal plants and several the aging nuclear plants are moving offline as they close for repair of reach end of life. What we have not done so well is to ensure that we have a solid base level of generation to supply electricity when there is no sun and no wind. Nuclear 15%. Biomass 5%. See [link].
