For the Americas region, the BMW Group has already reached agreements with domestic steel producers Steel Dynamics (SDI) and Big River Steel, a US Steel facility, to use renewable energy sources in their local steel production. If electricity from renewable energies is used for this process, then steel production is almost CO 2 -free.

Mexico-based global construction materials company CEMEX is partnering with integrated chemicals and energy company Sasol ecoFT and renewable energy company ENERTRAG to combine CO 2 with hydrogen to produce sustainable aviation fuel. ENERTRAG is a renewable-energy company based in Brandenburg, Germany.

Interjet and Airbus are scheduled to conduct the first Jatropha-based bio-fuel flight in Mexico today using an Airbus A320 aircraft. The aim of the demonstration flight and the project is to speed up the commercialization of aviation bio-fuel in Mexico. Other key members are expected to join the agreement shortly.

Joule has pioneered a CO 2 -to-fuel production platform using engineered bio-catalysts continuously to convert waste CO 2 directly into renewable fuels such as ethanol or hydrocarbons for diesel, jet fuel and gasoline. This cleared the catalyst for commercial use at the company’s demonstration plant in Hobbs, New Mexico.
