I knew I wanted something for her that was cheap to maintain, had a reliable automatic transmission, came with cruise control, AC. The gasoline engine only runs in reversing to power the batteries. It is something very cheap to fix and to inspect. It was time to buy our first car. This criteria only left the Prius in play.

In a new study published in the journal Applied Energy , Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) researchers found that controlled charging of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) reduces the costs of integrating the vehicles into an electricity system by 54–73% depending on the scenario.

It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery.
