A study conducted by a team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) compared the lifetime costs of owning a gas-powered vehicle versus that of owning an eco-friendly vehicle. Hybrids and EVs can cost you less. Moreover, electric cars use regenerative braking that reduces wear and tear compared to traditional brakes.

The central government’s plan, posted on its website, is targeting the production of 500,000 plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles by 2015, with output to grow to 2 million units of those types by 2020. China has made big progress in electric car technologies but still lags behind other countries in certain areas, said the report.
