The certification is based on Class NK’s “Guidelines for Large-capacity Storage Batteries,” which requires use of a BMU in the system as a safety feature.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has approved draft new mandatory regulations to cut the carbon intensity of existing ships. The strategy proposed that short-term measures should be those measures finalized and agreed by the Committee between 2018 and 2023.

announced the development of a hydrogen fuel cell system for maritime applications based on fuel cell technology for automobiles, as part of efforts to offer environment-friendly powertrain solutions. In 2018, Yanmar and Toyota Tsusho completed joint research on a fuel cell boat. The demonstration trial was conducted in March 2018.
