Toray Industries concluded an agreement with Lilium GmbH to supply carbon fiber composite materials for the Lilium Jet. The aircraft’s primary structures, such as the fuselage, wings and flaps will all be made from carbon fiber. Carbon fiber composite materials are needed to lighten such vehicles as the Lilium Jet.

Hexcel Corporation will invest $250 million in the construction of a carbon fiber plant in Roussilon, France. The new carbon fiber facility will occupy a 37-acre site at the Osiris Chemicals Industry Platform in Roussillon and will incorporate both polymerization and carbonization lines.

Following the production of first prototypes of battery enclosures for a Chinese automotive manufacturer in 2018, SGL Carbon has now received a substantial contract from a North American automaker for high-volume serial production of carbon and glass fiber-based composite top and bottom layers for battery enclosures.

We retained the basic concept with one gear and at the same time refined the details and manufactured all of the parts. 95% of the drivetrain parts are new and the engineers were able to shave 10% off the weight. By the end of July 2018, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) had homologated the car.
