Methanol can be used in internal combustion engines either directly or as a blend with gasoline. FFVs are designed to run on blends of methanol and gasoline in different ratios.

GM has made three product commitments for 2017 related to its sustainability strategy: to have 500,000 vehicles on the road in the US with some form of electrification ( earlier post ); to double the number of US models that can achieve an EPA-estimated 40 mpg US (5.9 Earlier post.). Research on hydrogen vehicles dipped until the 1990s when European countries announced plans for more hydrogen-centered car power, such as the 2005-07 bi-fuel BMW 7-Series with a V12 engine that ran on either compressed hydrogen or gasoline. Hydrogen is more flammable than gasoline, electric or natural gas vehicles.
