The team presented a paper on their work at the 2013 SAE World Congress in Detroit. Ford engineers also presented two other papers evaluating the effects of low to mid-level ethanol blends in spark-ignited engines at the conference. Thus, the benefit of increased CR enabled by increasing ethanol content is engine design specific.

The thermodynamics of the engine are virtually identical to the company’s previous CCI (Compact Compression Ignition) design, as described in a 2013 SAE paper, but are implemented in a much more conventional way. It expands all the way to ambient pressure before the exhaust stroke. All valves are actuated by overhead cams.
